The Elizabethtown Town Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber and is scheduled to conduct a public hearing regarding a proposed golf cart ordinance for the town. Following the public hearing, the board will consider whether or not to adopt the ordinance.

The need for a golf cart ordinance came to light during the board’s noon work session in August. Elizabethtown residents have raised concerns about children operating golf carts in a reckless manner on public streets. These reports are a violation of North Carolina Statue Article 15 § 160A-300.6.

There are concerns from citizens as well as town officials that a child could be seriously injured in a golf cart in the event of a collision. There have been numerous accidents involving golf carts in the region that resulted in serious injuries and even death of the operator of the golf cart.

If you would like to speak on the matter, you can sign up prior to the meeting by signing the speaker’s sheet available in the Council Chamber.
