During their regular Monday evening meeting, the Town of Elizabethtown Town Council approved a resolution to request that the NC General Assembly approve an act authorizing the Town to impose a Room Occupancy Tax (6%).

Mayor Campbell stated that the Town has never imposed this tax, but the plan is to utilize the funds from the tax for marketing purposes for the Town. The Council recognized two Police Sergeant Investigators on their accomplishments.  Thomas Davis and Sgt. Willie Thompson completed over 400 hours of class time in Investigative Techniques with the NC Justice Academy.  Police Chief Parrish stated the department is already benefiting from their training and they are seeing an increase in the number of cases solved.

Pat DeVane, Assistant Town Manager, updated the Council on current Town projects.  The Fire/Rescue building has experienced more delays and another 45 day extension was approved.  NCDOT has requested that Tory Hole Park remain closed.  They are beginning the log clean-up which will take approximately 6 to 8 weeks to complete.  Logs removed from the river will be ground on site and then will be given to the Town for mulch.  Also DeVane stated that there is no access to Tory Hole due to a change in the traffic pattern at the bridge.  NCDOT is aware and is making some changes in paving an area which will allow for entry.

A public hearing was held regarding an amendment to the Code of Ordinances.  Council later approved moving the Stormwater Protection section of the ordinances to a new Chapter.

In administrative matters, Council awarded engineering servies for the Water and Sewer Extension Project at the Industrial Park to Anderson Engineering; approved SEPI for street maintenance program for $26,680 from Powell Bill Funding; and approved budget amendment and monthly financial report.

Eddie Madden, Town Manager, announced that Pat DeVane, Assistant Town Manager, will be retiring at the end of the month.  DeVane was recognized by the Council during the Budget Retreat.  A reception for him will be held later this month.
