Elizabethtown Town Council met in regular session Monday evening, on the eve of the Municipal Election. Three seats are up for grabs in the Town Council race. The three incumbents, Paula Greene, Rufus Lloyd, and Hubert Lewis are running against one newcomer, Robert (Bobby) Kinlaw. Kinlaw is the current Chair of the Elizabethtown Planning and Zoning Board and the former Elizabethtown Police Chief. Greene encouraged everyone to vote tomorrow. She stated that there were only 314 early voters in Elizabethtown.

A public hearing was held to hear public comments regarding a Rezoning Request for property located at 2900 and 2904 E. Broad Street from R-12 Medium Density Residential to C1 General Commercial. This is the current site of McDuffie Pest Control.There were no public comments. Council approved the ordinance to allow the rezoning request as presented.

Mayor Campbell presented a Proclamation for “Hire a Vet Week” (November 6-12th) to Ann Garrett of the Employment Security Commission. She also presented the “Youth Appreciation Week” (4th week of November) Proclamation to Ryan Godwin of the Elizabethtown Optimist Club.

In other business Council approved 2016-17 Audit Report; Airport Terminal Building change order; approved low bid for renovations to Tory Hole Park restrooms to F3 Construction Co.; renewed Inmate Labor Contract with NC Dept of Corrections; approved Light Fixture Plan for Phase II of the Downtown Revitalization Landcscape Project; approved budget amendments, tax releases and the monthly Financial Report; and approved private negotioation and sale for vacant lot located on W Broad St.

Kelly Robeson, Director of Division of Aging requested that Council consider reducing speed limit on street between Senior Center and Bladen Medical. Residents from the apartments walk or ride wheelchairs to both facilities and she would like to be promote safety for the residents. Council will present an ordinance at their November meeting.

An update was given on the closing of Lock & Dam #2. It will be closed for at least a year to close a scoure hole in the area of the Lock & Dam. The road leading to the area will also be closed due to granite truck traffic and repair work.

The Town offices will be closed Friday for the Veteran’s Day Holiday.
