Elizabethtown Town Council met in regular session Monday evening and heard a report from Public Works Director Pat DeVane regarding testing of the Town’s wells. DeVane stated that “the wells were tested for Gen-X and 4 related compounds with no measurable concentration of the compounds.” He will continue to keep up-to-date with the information from the State, but, as of right now, “the Town’s water supply is safe”.
After a public hearing, Council approved an ordinance to reduce the speed limit to 20 mph on McLeod Street at the entrance to Bladen Medical. Safety of McLeod Village residents was a concern as residents are walking or riding in wheelchairs to the Senior Center as well as to BMA for appointments.
Bladen County Clerk of Superior Court Nikki Dennis administered the Oaths of Office to re-elected council members Paula Greene, Rufus Lloyd and Herman Lewis.
In administrative matters, Council re-appointed Wayne Edge and Jack Cross to the Local Firemen’s Relief Fund Board; approved the Certified List of Firefighters; approved a temporary Microwave Agreement with T-Mobile; approved a Revocable License Agreement with the County for installation of a gate and fence system at the Courthouse; and approved a budget amendment, tax releases and the monthly financial report.
Council members discussed at length the Currie House property on Broad Street. Billie Hall gave an update then a hearing was held. Currie has 90 days to alter, repair, or demolish property with the next step to follow in April. Council members shared concerns from citizens regarding other properies as well. Town Manager Eddie Madden stated he plans to bring a proposal during Budget retreat regarding a joint Code Enforcer position for the Town to share with White Lake and, possibly, Dublin. Currently, there are over 100 propeties that have been identified by the Planning Board that have been prioritized for action.
Council approved rescheduling January’s meeting to Tuesday, January 2, 2018.
