NC DOT

NC DOTAccording to NC DOT officials, the Elwell Ferry near Kelly is closed due to high water. According to Kenneth Clark, of the NC Department of Transportation, the Cape Fear River levels rose overnight and as a result, NC DOT had to cease operation of the Elwell Ferry until the river level falls.  According to Clark, NOAA is forecasting early next week before river levels are back to within operating range.

The Elwell Ferry is the oldest cable operated ferry in North Carolina. The ferry connects NC Highway 87 to NC 53 in the vicinity of the community of Kelly. The ferry has operated continuously for about 111 years.
