Elwell Ferry will be closed until 7 a.m. Tuesday, April 15 due to high water, the N.C. Department of Transportation announced Thursday.
The inland cable ferry, which is free to ride, connects NC 53 and NC 87, crossing the Cape Fear River and connecting Carvers Creek and Kelly.
The ferry is located at 2700 Elwell Ferry Road in Kelly. It began operation in 1905 and is among only a handful of inland ferries that continued to be used in North Carolina.
