Elwell Ferry has reopened after being closed for nearly two weeks for maintenance, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The inland cable ferry, which is free to ride, closed for maintenance Oct. 17 and originally was expected to reopen Oct. 24. The reopening then was extended to Oct. 31. NCDOT announced Tuesday that maintenance had been completed two days early.
The ferry connects NC 53 and NC 87, crossing the Cape Fear River and connecting Carvers Creek and Kelly.
The ferry is located at 2700 Elwell Ferry Road in Kelly. It began operation in 1905 and is among only a handful of inland ferries that continued to be used in North Carolina.
