NC Charter School Advisory Board approves Charter School for BladenThe Emerau:Bladen Charter School will be holding an open house on Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, at their office which will be located at 118 West Broad Street in Elizabethtown.

Kate Alice Dunaway, director for the school, said that individuals can come to the open house and learn more about the school, its curriculum, the draft school calendar, and the uniforms.

Emerau:Bladen is slated to open in August 2017 and is tentatively set to begin taking applications in November and will extend for a number of months.

At a recent meeting of the Emerau:Bladen board, it was also announced that a potential site has been chosen. Capital Advantage for Education, who has been working with the board, has recommended a property located off of Airport Road with access from both the NC 87 Bypass and Airport Road.

Dunaway said the property is a 26 acre tract and the board is in a “due diligence” phase now regarding purchasing the land.

When asked about the building to be constructed. Dunaway said that the Emerau:Bladen board has been considering several options on the classroom building. Dunaway said the building could potentially consist of a large modular unit or a couple of small modular units or construction of a building. She said that regardless of the configuration of the building, the school will open in August 2017.

Dunaway said the initial enrollment is expected to be 308 students and the school will open as a k-6 grade school and add one grade level per year until they complete 12th grade.

The charter school will follow the North Carolina Standard Course of Study but it will be extended with the inclusion of the Core Knowledge curriculum said Dunaway. She added the science and math curriculum will also be extended with the addition of a curriculum called Maker Space.

Dunaway said the school has not begun accepting application for teachers and staff but hopes to begin that process soon. The Emerau:Bladen website is not live yet, but Dunaway said that should be coming soon, as well.
