Staff Report
Effective immediately through date of internment (as yet unknown), the US Flag will be flown at half-staff in respect for the passing of for Pope Francis.
Flying the American flag at half-staff is a symbolic gesture to signify mourning or respect. It often happens after the death of government officials, military members, or first responders. It also happens during national tragedies, on Memorial Day (until noon), and other remembrance days.
The procedure involves momentarily raising the flag to its peak before lowering it to the half-staff position. The flag is raised to the peak again before being lowered completely.
The duration the flag is flown at half-staff depends on the occasion, and federal guidelines cover the deaths of certain officials. Proclamations from the President or state governors set other periods. Detailed information on these guidelines can be found through U.S. government resources.
