The National Guard Armory in Elizabethtown will be the site for a Stand Down event for Veterans and their families on Thursday, July 19th, from 10 AM until 2 PM. The featured guest speaker will be U.S. Marine Corp Sgt. Maj. Paul A. Berry (retd).

Renee Deramus with NC Works said there will be medical and dental screenings, homeless prevention assistance, employment and job counseling, and mental health providers on site; as well as Legal Aid of NC. There will also be information available regarding veteran educational opportunities and chaplain services.

Deramus said Michael Dorman with the Military Missions in Action will also speak during the event. Military Missions in Action assist veterans who may need modifications made to their home, as well as supporting the men and women who are currently serving in combat areas.

Deramus also said there is an active effort to establish a Veteran’s Court in Bladen County. She said the Veteran’s Court is available to assist those veterans who have court cases pending in the judicial system.

The event is free and open to all veterans and their families. Deramus said you do not have to be registered in the VA medical system to take part in any of the health or dental screenings. Officials will be available to assist you if you wish to join the VA medical system.

Deramus added that a representative from the Social Security Administration will be present to assist anyone needing information about Social Security and its programs such as retirement or disability.

The Elizabethtown National Guard Armory is located at 1001 W. Swanzy Street, Elizabethown, NC 28337.
