mlkThe 28th annual parade honoring the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held in Elizabethtown on Monday, Jan. 18,  at 11 a.m.

Following the parade, the community is invited to the Presbyterian Activities Center facility of Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church located at 800 West Broad Street (across from the Elizabethtown Town Hall), for a time of recalling and celebrating Dr. King’s legacy. A light lunch will be served followed by a program of music, dance, and inspiration. There will be no charge for lunch, but donations will be welcome. The Rev. Delton Farmer of the College Heights Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville will speak on “Life with Possibilities.” The Bladen Presbyterian Parish – eight Presbyterian churches in Bladen and Columbus counties – is again sponsoring the gathering.

Martin Luther King Day celebrates the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He promoted Civil Rights through nonviolent civil disobedience. He is perhaps best known for his ‘I have a dream…’ speech in 1963. He was assassinated in 1968. Martin Luther King, Jr. day became a federally recognized holiday in 1983 and was first observed in 1986. In 2000, it became nationally observed in all states. Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place on the third Monday of January each year.
