“Exuviate is influence by both the esthetic of Pop Surrealism and the Buddhist doctrine of the mind over the body. The organic folds represent the body and all of the impulses and indulgences that come with it, as each semi-narrative piece takes the viewer deeper into the experience of emotions like distraction, sexual awakening, discomfort, depression and morbidity. Focusing on these more negative tendencies is my intent – I wish for the viewer to start a dialog in which they address a time that they experienced these negatives and to realize that they are not alone. The body and it’s many trappings are experienced by us all, and should be discussed in order to rationalize the emotions evoked. I find that our world is too escapist, too quiet about the negative aspects of life – yet these unfortunate experiences have the potential to unite us all. If we acknowledge our faults and remove the stigma, I feel that individuals – as well as our society – could progress towards a mindful existence. These pieces are meant to speak to those stigmatized emotions and to turn them into a bonding experience,” said Spruill of the exhibit.
