FAYETTEVILLE – April 6, 2020 – The Fayetteville Woodpeckers are doing their part to help local caregivers on the frontlines fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
The Houston Astros minor league baseball team purchased 500 meal vouchers for the entire Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital staff. The hospital is located in downtown Fayetteville, near Segra Stadium, where the Fayetteville Woodpeckers play.
The vouchers are worth $7 each and can be used at the hospital’s cafeteria. Each voucher was printed with a special message from the team:
“In appreciation for your continued commitment to serving others, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers Baseball Club would like to take care of your meal today. From our nest to yours, thank you for your hard work keeping our community safe and healthy.”
Michael Zappa, M.D., Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital President, says there is no better way to unite a close-knit community than to share food, even if people can’t do it as a group.
“We appreciate this act of kindness,” Dr. Zappa said. “It will help fuel our fight against COVID-19, and help us look forward to the day we can enjoy gathering together again.”
Sabrina Brooks, Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation Director, was equally appreciative.
“The Fayetteville Woopeckers have been a great community partner ever since arriving in town last spring,” she said. “We’re grateful the team has chosen to support our hard-working employees during this trying time.”
The Fayetteville Woodpeckers are the Class A-Advanced affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros. In their inaugural season, the Woodpeckers won the 2019 Carolina League Southern Division Championship, while drawing more than a quarter of a million people into downtown Fayetteville.
The Fayetteville Woodpeckers Fund, the official team charity, has invested nearly $100,000 in the greater Fayetteville community since its establishment in 2019. The fund’s cornerstone is The Community Leaders Program. It places an emphasis on youth sports, military, and community health/natural disaster causes.
