A fire on Thursday morning resulted in one man being issued a citation for illegal burning, according to Columbus County Fire Marshall Shannon Blackman.

Acie Kelly of Fayetteville was issued a citation for illegal burning as firefighters from North Whiteville and Clarkton Fire Departments worked to keep the fire contained to the lot on Memory’s Corner Road.

Kelly was at 518 Memory’s Corner Road cleaning up the lot where the single-wide home was located and was told to burn it, according to Blackman.

“North Carolina Air Quality won’t allow you to burn any man-made materials,” said Blackman.

He added that Columbus County has also adopted the state’s standards for illegal burning.

“You can only burn natural vegetation,” said Blackman.

Kelly paid the fine and no further citations were issued.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s office also responded to the scene.
