A structure fire call came in Saturday morning at 1:59 a.m., according to Mr. Kenneth Clark, Bladen County Fire Marshal. The call was for a house located at 65 West Green Street in Clarkton.

Many Bladen County citizens know the home to be that of the late,  Lieutenant Governor Jimmy Green.

“It was an old and well built house which made it hard to fight the fire,” Clark said, “Clarkton [Fire Department] did a great job on it.”

The Fire Departments from Clarkton, Bladenboro, Elizabethtown and North Whiteville along with the Bladen County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the emergency call.

Clark said, “We’ve been out there all weekend.”

Smoke and heat damage caused pretty much everything to be a total loss, according to Clark. No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. At this time the needs of the residents of the home are not known.

Update:

Randy Benton, of the home, has been arrested on arson charges issued by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office and the Fire Marshal’s Office according to Clark.

More information will be provided as soon as it is made available.
