nailing-roofBlue skies and fall-like temperatures were the order of the day on Tuesday as residents began to effect repairs and clean up the debris left behind by Hurricane Matthew. Chain saws, generators and the sounds of hammers striking nails could be heard throughout Bladen County.

First responders have arrived from neighboring counties to assist local first responders. On Tuesday, representatives from Gaston County, Brunswick County, Union, National Guard troops, NC Highway Patrol Troopers and others, had poured into Bladen County to assist exhausted local first responders.

“We’re very fortunate to have so many resources and assistance from other counties,” said Bladen County Manager Greg Martin.

Martin said he wanted to thank the folks here locally for their hard work and commitment they have shown throughout the storm.

On Tuesday morning, the decision was made to lift the evacuation order for residents along Burney Road and River Road. Several rescues have taken place in the Kelly area due to high water, said Captain Jeff Singletary with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

He said that in some locations, first responders have had to go in and drop food to people who are stranded.

As of Tuesday morning, NC 41 East at South River was still flooded and NC 210 in the vicinity of Rowan was flooded. NC 53 East near Kelly is flooded, NC 53 West is flooded in several locations. For a complete listing of road closings you can check https://www.ncdot.gov/traffictravel/
