WILMINGTON — Alton Broyles returned a punt 30 yards for a touchdown and the Carolina Bengals defense shut out the South Carolina Venom in the second half for a 14-12 victory Saturday in a Coastal Football Alliance game at Legion Stadium.

Jalen Gore caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Harkeem Brantley and Demond Perry ran the two-point conversion in the first quarter that gave the East Arcadia-based Bengals an 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Jesus Gomez led the Carolina defense with seven tackles, including one for loss. Isaiah Young had five tackles, including two for loss. Foster Brooks and Jamaal Andrews each had five tackles. Kameron Newkirk had a pair of tackles for losses. McKenzie Frazier recovered a fumble.

The Bengals (2-1) have won two straight after a season-opening 37-0 loss against the Carolina Spartans. Carolina is scheduled to host the Virginia Royals on Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at Legion Stadium.
