FAIRMONT- Senior Jordan Waters sparked Fairmont to an early 16-0 lead, and the Tornadoes defeated West Bladen 28-6 Friday night in the Three Rivers Conference football opener for both teams.

Waters sprinted 44 yards for the first Tornado touchdown, then set up the second score with a punt return deep into Knight territory. Quarterback Jayvon Morris scooted 4 yards for the touchdown, and Waters ran the 2-point conversion for a 16-0 lead with 4:27 left in the opening quarter.

“He (Waters) was all over the field,” said Knight Coach Kris Williams. Waters is committed to play football at Duke next season.

The Knights rallied as junior quarterback Tyre Boykin fired a 23-yard touchdown pass to sophmore Shy’ron Adams. The touchdown pass converted a fourth-down-and-22 situation.

Fairmont’s Cameron Harrington recovered a fumbled snap to set up the next Tornado touchdown. Freshman Colby Thorndyke galloped 15 yards for the touchdown that padded the lead to 22-6 with 4:25 remaining in the half.

West Bladen fought back and drove deep into Fairmont territory, but a pass was dropped in the end zone and the Knights were turned away.

Thorndyke scored the final Fairmont touchdown with 7:03 left in the game. Thorndyke carried ten times for 91 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Boykin completed 13 of 20 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown for the Knights. Boykin also ran for 28 yards. Adams caught 5 passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. Senior Kerron Washington caught 7 passes for 72 yards and ran for 14 yards.

The Knights will host Red Springs Friday night.
