FAYETTEVILLE – Sophomore Walker Ward recovered a fumble in the end zone for the game’s only touchdown Monday night as Harrells Christian edged Trinity Christian 7-6 in a rainy NCISAA football opener.

Harrells senior Issac Underwood ran the ball down to the goal line before fumbling into the end zone leading to Ward’s touchdown recovery with 3:03 left in the first quarter. The Crusaders tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Tyree Kirk dashed 48 yards for a Trinity touchdown in the third quarter, but a bad snap stopped the 2-point conversion attempt, and the Crusaders held a 7-6 lead with 10:49 remaining in the period.

Junior fullback Devin Gardner picked up a key first down on a 4th down and 3 play at the Trinity Christian 19 yard line with 1:04 remaining in third quarter, but a fumble ended the drive.

Trinity drove to the Harrells 40 yard line in the final quarter, but Crusader senior Zach Butler recovered a Trinity fumble to clinch the victory.

The Crusaders, now 1-0, will travel to North Raleigh Christian Friday night.
