DUBLIN – Senior B. J. Drake rushed for 184 yards, and sophmore Tyre Boykin and junior Kerron Washington scored second-half touchdowns to propel West Bladen to a 20-6 non-conference football victory over Midway Monday night.

The game was suspended by lightning Friday night with the score tied 6-6 and 2:23 remaining in the first period. When play resumed Monday, the Knights were stopped by a fumble on fourth down at the Midway 14 yardline.

After stopping Midway, the Knights drove 50 yards before turning the ball over on a fumble at the Raider 3 yardline.

The Raiders responded with an 84-yard, 14-play drive that consumed over 8 minutes and was kept alive by 5 Knight penalties including a roughing the kicker and a fourth down pass interference flag. On fourth down at the West 13 yardline, junior Gabriel McDowell threw the Midway runner for a 2-yard loss.

Midway’s Donte Blue returned the second-half kick-off 50 yards to the Knight 35 yardline. However junior Aldo Hernandez sacked the Raider quarter for a 9-yard loss on fourth down to end the threat.

The Raiders fumbled a Knight punt and Boykin scooped up the ball and sprinted 38 yards for a touchdown with 7:07 left in the third quarter. Drake blasted through the middle for the 2-point conversion and a 14-6 West Bladen lead.

Midway mounted a 46-yard drive that featured the passing of quarterback Carson Calcutt who connected on passes of 18, 21 and 13 yards before a fourth down pass fell incomplete at the Knight 32 yardline.

Freshman Shy’ron Adams picked off a Calcutt pass and returned the ball 17 yards to the Midway 48 yardline with 4:21 left to play in the game. Drake pounded the middle for runs of 11 and 12 yards, before Washington popped through the left side on the counter and bolted 25 yards for the clinching touchdown with 3:26 on the clock.

The Raiders used 12 plays to drive 52 yards, but Washington intercepted a Calcutt pass in the end zone and dashed 47 yards out to the Knight 45 yardline to seal the victory.

“Kerron always seems to do something to give us a spark,” said Knight Coach Kris Williams. “He came up big tonight.”

Drake’s 184 yards on 17 carries supplied the bulk of the Knights 265 yards rushing. “B. J. is just a great back,” said Coach Williams.

“That was ugly,” said Coach Williams about the game. “But I will take it. Too many penalties (13 for 120 yards) and fumbles. A lot of missed assignments, but nothing that we can’t fix.”

Senior lineman Jonathan Robinson led the Knight defense with ten tackles. Senior Zion Barrett finished with 8 tackles, and Adams totaled 6 tackles to go with his interception.

Midway’s Calcutt completed 9 of 18 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown but had 2 interceptions. Blue carried 14 times for 95 yards for the Raiders who totaled 281 yards of offense.

The Knights improved to 2-0 and will host Fairmont Friday at 7 p.m. in their Three Rivers Conference opener.
