This past Saturday, October 15th there was an extremely fun and educational event held in Fort Fisher. At this event, there were discussions and demonstrations covering Fort Fisher’s World War II history.

America’s involvement in World War II brought about significant social and economic changes to Wilmington, North Carolina, much like the Civil War’s effects in the 1860s. Fort Fisher maintained Wilmington, North Carolina’s harbor, accessible to blockade runners bringing essential supplies to Confederate soldiers’ interiors until the last few months of the Civil War. During World War II, Fort Fisher was utilized as an anti-aircraft training site. At Fort Fisher, both men and women served, whether in the Women’s Army Corps or anti-aircraft forces.

At the Fort Fisher Historic Site, they went into depth with weapon demonstrations, and living historian interpretations, and had activities for the kids too! Author and military historian, Wilbur Jones gave a lecture on Wilmington’s World War II history as well.

As I am sure you can tell, there were a majority of things to do, see, and learn from at this event that took place last weekend. You do not have to worry at all because the historians of Fort Fisher produced a new film, an orientation-style video covering World War II history. While watching the video you will receive a noble overview of Fort Fisher in the 1940s.
