COOPERSTOWN, NY – Four Elizabethtown baseball players are playing this week for the Area Stars – Derrick team that won its’ first two games Sunday in the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park.
 
In Sunday morning’s tournament opener, the Area Stars – Derrick walloped six home runs in an 11-3 victory over the Jr. Sequoyah Chiefs. Three of those home runs were slugged by the Elizabethtown players on the team.
 
Ty Mathis and Ryan Johnson blasted 2-run homers, and Elijah Bullard clobbered a solo home run. Jackson Wright, the other Elizabethtown player on the Area Stars, belted 2 singles in the game. Mathis also pitched 2 innings in the game.
 
Mathis hammered a 2-run homer in the first inning Sunday afternoon as the Area Stars – Derrick grabbed an early 2-0 lead over the Delmarva Aces from Maryland. The Aces tied the game 2-2 in the second inning.
 
The Area Stars – Derrick moved back in front 4-2 in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Mathis came in to pitch with the bases-loaded and picked a runner off second base to end the inning. Mathis struck out four and shutout the Aces over the last 2 innings to record the save.
 
Monday the Area Stars – Derrick will play the Flagler (FL) Bandits at 1:45 p.m. then battle the Nevada Elite Gorillas at 7 p.m.
