The Smithfield Packing plant in Tar Heel is expected to resume partial operations Wednesday and be fully operational Thursday after repairs are done on a section of the roof, the company said Tuesday morning.

Smithfield Packing shut down because of roof problemThe massive hog slaughterhouse and production plant off N.C. 87 shut down Monday morning and all workers sent home when a beam became separated from the roof over a section of the plant, the company said.

“Contrary to many news reports, there was not an ammonia leak nor a roof collapse at our Tar Heel facility (Monday) morning.” said Kathleen Kirkham, who is director of Corporate Communications for the Smithfield, Virginia-based company. “Maintenance crews are currently on site investigating and repairing a separated beam in the roof structure over a section of the plant. The safety of our employees is our top priority, so employees were sent home (Monday) in an abundance of caution.”

The Tar Heel plant was evacuated Oct. 12 because of an ammonia leak. The plant was shut down for several hours in order to allow the building to be ventilated properly.
