Congressman Robert Pittenger HeadshotCHARLOTTE – The Government Accountability Office has officially accepted Congressman Robert Pittenger’s request to review the critical committee responsible for reviewing national security implications of foreign takeovers of U.S. businesses.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has not been substantially updated since being created in the 1970s.

Due to the evolving nature of national security threats, Congressman Pittenger (NC-09) in September requested a GAO review on whether CFIUS statutory and administrative authorities have kept pace.  Congressman Pittenger’s bipartisan request is supported by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes and was co-signed by 15 additional Congressional leaders.

“Should a Chinese, state-controlled firm be allowed to purchase critical infrastructure in the United States?” asked Congressman Pittenger.  “Does a foreign investment increase the risk of cyber war or job loss through currency manipulation?  These weren’t issues in 1975.  We need to ensure CFIUS has the authority to fully examine these evolving national security threats.”

The GAO expects to begin their review in early 2017.
