The Annual Old Brown Marsh Friends and Family Gathering was held this Saturday at the historical church. Even with the wet weather the turn out was impressive.

“There is a lot of history right here.” Bennie Williams explained. “There was even a battle between the Wigs and the Loyalist near these grounds.” He said.
Marked with flags flying proudly, graves of veterans of the Revolutionary War, Civil War and World War I and II can be seen on the church’s yard. Williams said, “There are people who are buried here from every war the US has been in.”
Jerry Sykes, Tony Chavis, Andy Chavis, and  Mary Chavis assisted at the registration tent giving accounts of the history of the church located on Brown Marsh Road in Clarkton. According to the group, Clarktonian James McNeil Whistler’s mother, Mrs. Whistler, a famous painter, was one of the founding members of the sacred church.
Bagpiper, Peter McArthur played Scottish tunes and Joe Melvin was the guest speaker.  There was a covered dish lunch for all in attendance to enjoy.
The gathering is held the second Saturday in October every year. For more information about this event visit Golden Years of Clarkton’s Facebook page.
