Redistriting map_0219Voters will be going to the polls not once but twice this year in North Carolina. They will go once to vote in state and local races and a second time to vote of their US House members unless the United States Supreme Court steps in.

The NC Senate approved a change to the election schedule on Friday with a vote of 29-15 that would move the election for members of the US House of Representatives to June 7 unless the US Supreme Court issues a ruling in the matter. The measure also eliminates a “run-off” primary. NC Senator Bill Rabon voted in favor of the measure.

The bill will also allow for a new filing period for Congressional Candidates that will begin at noon on March 16.

In a related matter, the NC House of Representatives voted on Friday to approve a Congressional district map that redraws the state’s 13 districts. The new map will have Bladen County split between the Ninth and Seventh Congressional Districts. The map was approved by a 65-43 vote. NC Rep. William Brisson voted against the redistricting plan while NC Rep. Ken Waddell was not present for Friday’s vote.

Currently, Bladen County is in the Seventh Congressional District which is represented by Republican David Rouzer.  The Ninth Congressional District is represented by Republican Robert Pittenger.

The newly drawn Ninth district would consist of a portion of Bladen County, a portion of Cumberland County, a portion of Mecklenberg County and all of Robeson, Anson, Scotland, Richmond, and Union counties.

The newly drawn Seventh District would consist of a portion of Bladen County, a portion of Johnston County and all of Columbus, New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Duplin, Sampson and Wayne counties.
