Gibson Cancer Center’s (GCC) medical oncology unit and blood disorder clinic are set to reopen in their original location at 1200 Pine Run Drive on Monday, Aug. 17, following a fire that destroyed a portion of the facility in late-June.

Employees with the radiation oncology unit will also move back to the original location to continue consults and care plans until that portion of the facility is rebuilt and radiation treatments can be resumed.

A certificate of occupancy was approved by the City of Lumberton building inspection department on August 12.

A fire destroyed the radiation oncology wing of the facility in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 27. The medical oncology unit also suffered smoke and water damage that forced the facility to move to a temporary location.

Immediately following the fire, the GCC staff worked throughout the weekend to set up a temporary facility at nearby 730 Oakridge Bouldvard and began treating patients there the following Monday.

Demolition of the burned portion of the facility has been completed and preparations are underway for construction to begin later this month to rebuild the radiation oncology unit.

Refreshments will be served in the main lobby of the center on Monday, Aug. 17 as the center celebrates the return of its staff, providers, patients and their family members.
