Clinton’s Lady Dark Horses cemented their hold on second place in the Four County Conference Girls Basketball Standings Friday night with a 50-30 victory over visiting West Bladen.
The Lady Knights could have tied Clinton for second place with a victory, but instead dropped to 8-4 in the league and 12-10 overall.
Clinton jumped out to a 5-0 lead, before senior Delasia Richardson dropped in a lay-up off of a Miriam Mendoza assist to put West Bladen on the board with 4:20 left in the first period.
Sophmore Akira Grimes and Richardson sank free throws to keep West within 8-4, before another 5-0 Clinton run made it 13-4 at the quarter break.
Sophmores Kassidy Anderson and Kaylee Stevens put back rebound baskets in the second quarter, and sophmore Laikyn Pait added a free throw, but Clinton grew the lead to 28-9 at the half.
Senior Breanna Jackson scored on a follow shot to begin the second half, and Pait banked in a one-handed runner to trim the margin to 28-13.
Sophmore Logan Autry drove for a lay-up, and Pait drilled a 3-point shot to keep West within 34-18. Mendoza popped in a baseline jumper, then passed ahead to Anderson for a lay-up that sliced the margin to 34-22.
A pair of Clinton baskets upped the count to 38-22 at the quarter break.
Autry made a couple of free throws, and Mendoza banked in a 10-footer to keep West within 44-26. Mendoza pitched ahead to Jackson for a lay-up, and Richardson muscled in a follow shot to make the final margin 50-30.
Pait topped the Lady Knight offense with 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Richardson added 5 points and 7 rebounds. Mendoza, a senior, dished out 12 assists and scored 4 points.
Anderson chipped in with 10 rebounds and 4 points. Jackson finished with 4 points and 5 rebounds. Autry also totaled 4 points.
Kiera Mabry led the Lady Dark Horses with 14 points, and Kris Glasper and Alex Canady tallied 10 points each.
West Bladen will travel to Midway Tuesday night.
