ELIZABETHTOWN – Sophmore Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson fired in 11 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as East Bladen opened Four County Conference girls basketball play with a 44-35 victory over Midway.

Moore-Peterson made 7 of 9 free throws in the quarter and dropped in a pair of baskets that grew a 30-25 lead to 42-34. Sophmore Ashley Hardin sank 2 free throws in the period, and senior Emily Scott hit one.

Hardin finished with 8 points, and junior Shardajah Brown followed with 7 points. Scott totaled 5 points.

Moore-Peterson tossed in the first 2 East Bladen baskets, and Brown drained a 3-point shot and a 2 point shot as the Lady Eagles grabbed an early 9-3 lead. East led 9-6 at the quarter break.

Scott threw in a pair of baskets in the second quarter, and freshman Lorna Mendell and senior Yolanda Coston connected for one basket each as the Lady Eagles withstood a 14-8 run that produced a 20-17 Midway run. Baskets by Hardin and Brown vaulted East Bladen back on top 21-20 at halftime.

Moore-Peterson nailed a 3-point shot to begin the second half then canned 2 free throws for a 26-23 lead. Hardin hit 2 free throws then closed out the quarter with a basket that padded the East lead to 30-25.

Guard Leah Williams led Midway with 10 points.

Coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles improved to 6-1 on the season and will travel to Cape Fear Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game.
