FAIRMONT – Sophomore Maegan Burney fired in 14 of her game-high 20 points as East Bladen built a 36-16 halftime lead en route to a 56-42 Three Rivers Conference girls’ basketball victory over Fairmont.
Burney popped in 2 baskets and 2 free throws in the opening quarter, and junior Alexus Mitchell buried a pair of 3-point baskets as the Lady Eagles took a 17-10 lead. Sophomore Karli Priest nailed a 3-point shot, and sophomore AnnaGrey Heustess pumped in a basket.
Burney lit up the scoreboard with 4 baskets during a 19-6 East Bladen 2nd period spurt. Heustess drained a 3-point shot and another basket. Mya McDonald tossed in 2 baskets, and Mitchell canned 2 free throws.
Heustess bombed in another 3-ball in the 3rd quarter, Burney dropped in 2 more baskets, and Mitchell pumped in a basket and a free throw to keep the Lady Eagle lead at 46-30.
McDonald flipped in a pair of baskets in the final quarter, and Mitchell, Heustess and Burney delivered a basket each to maintain the East lead.
Mitchell followed Burney in the Lady Eagle scoring column with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Heustess racked up 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocked shots, and 4 steals. Burney pulled down 8 rebounds and collected 3 steals. McDonald filled up the stat sheet with 8 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Priest was credited with 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Jakirra White scored 10 of her team-high 14 points for Fairmont in the 2nd half. Teammate Angelaysha Thompson finished with 8 points.
Coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles improved to 4-2 in conference play and 7-2 overall and will travel to West Bladen Friday at 4:30 to complete regular season play.
