WHITEVILLE – Elizabethtown raced to a 19-6 first-half lead en route to a 26-21 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls’ basketball victory over Elizabethtown Monday.

Laila Smith and Iveonna Ward threw in 2 baskets each to spark the Lady Cougars to a 10-2 first period lead. Teammate Shabrea Geathers also tossed in a basket.

Elizabethtown’s Zoe Smith drilled in a 3-point shot and another basket in the second quarter. Laila Smith and Ward added a basket each as the Lady Cougar lead grew to 19-6.

Emmy Williams with 2 baskets and Egypt Childress with 3 points rallied the Lady Hornets to within 22-17 in the third period. Zoe Smith nailed a 3-point shot to keep Elizabethtown on top.

Ward dropped in a basket and a free throw, and Laila Smith sank a free throw in the final period as the Lady Cougars held on for the win.

Ward led the Lady Cougars with 9 points, and Zoe Smith followed with 8 points. Laila Smith finished with 7 points. Childress topped all scorers for Central with 10 points.

Coach Cedric Owens’ Lady Cougars improved to 5-1 in Waccamaw Division AA play and 7-1 overall and will travel to Tar Heel Tuesday.
