BLADENBORO – Junior Kasee Singletary keyed a late 6-2 spurt that helped West Bladen survive a furious West Columbus rally and pull out a 35-28 Three Rivers Conference girls basketball victory Wednesday night.
Freshman Haley George’s lay-up with 2:55 remaining in the third period gave the Lady Knights a 27-8 lead, but Tah’nijah McKoy bombed in a pair of 3-pointers, Tiyarna Braddy tossed in 5 points and Willow Stackhouse dropped in 2 lay-ups during an 18-2 Lady Viking run that sliced the margin to 29-26 with 4:30 left in the game.
Singletary banked in a 6-footer then fired a long pass to junior Seniah Johnson for a lay-up and a 33-27 lead at the 1:39 mark. A pair of Singletary free throws with 23 seconds left boosted the lead to 35-27.
“We kind of relaxed and got careless with the ball,” said Lady Knight Coach Brian McCleney. “We were rusty after the two week lay-off, and they made a run. But these girls found a way to tough it out. They just keep winning these close games.”
Junior Lexie Corrothers led West Bladen with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Singletary racked up 8 points, 8 steals and 6 rebounds. Senior Carley Dawson pulled down 12 rebounds and scored 6 points. George collected 6 steals, and junior Mikayla Meadows grabbed 5 rebounds.
Corrothers and Singletary drove for lay-ups, and Dawson canned 2 free throws as West Bladen built an 8-2 first quarter lead.
Johnson turned a Singletary assist into a lay-up to start the second period. Corrothers raced to the basket for 2 lay-ups and made 4 free throws. A Dawson follow shot pushed the lead to 21-4. West Bladen led 21-6 at halftime.
Singletary’s lay-up, and a pair of Corrothers free throws grew the lead to 25-8.
McKoy topped the West Columbus scoring with 13 points. Stackhouse finished with 8 points.
The Lady Knights remained unbeaten in league play with a 5-0 record and are 8-2 overall. West Bladen will host St. Pauls Friday night.
