West Bladen High School LogoFAIRMONT – Freshman Haley George scored a key basket in the closing minute as West Bladen withstood a furious Fairmont rally and claimed a 42-41 victory in their Three Rivers Conference girls basketball opener.

After the Lady Knight defense held Fairmont to only 6 points in the second and third quarters while building a 28-17 lead, the Lady Tornadoes rode a 24-11 surge to a 41-39 lead.

Junior Lexie Corrothers made a free throw to pull West within 41-40 before George pumped in a 6-foot jumper in the final minute that proved to be the game-winner. Junior Mikayla Meadows grabbed a defensive rebound that secured the win.

Singletary tossed in 2 baskets and 2 free throws in the opening period, and George added a basket and a free throw to keep West Bladen within 11-9 at the quarter break.

George nailed a 3-point shot and 2 free throws, and Singletary threw in 2 baskets as the Lady Knights rode a 12-4 surge to a 21-15 halftime lead.

Singletary connected for 2 more baskets in the third quarter, and junior Seniah Johnson tacked on a basket to push the West lead to 28-17.

Sanayah Thompson sparked the 24-11 Fairmont fourth quarter flurry with 7 points, and Kaitlyn Hunt and Kayla Powell added 5 points each.

Corrothers kept the Lady Knights close with 2 baskets and 2 free throws, and Carley Dawson and Scjada Ellison dropped in a basket each in the final period.

Singletary led all scorers with 16 points. George finished with 10 points, and Corrothers totaled 8 points.

Powell topped the Fairmont scoring with 9 points, and Thompson followed with 7 points.

Coach Brian McCleney’s Lady Knights improved to 3-2 overall and will travel to Union Wednesday night.
