BLADENBORO – Junior Lexie Corrothers posted a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead West Bladen to a 47-20 Three Rivers Conference girls basketball victory over Fairmont Tuesday night.
Junior Kasee Singletary stole the ball and pitched ahead to Corrothers for a lay-up in the first six seconds of play. Singletary drove for a lay-up, and Corrothers sank 2 free throws and put back a rebound to push the West lead to 8-0.
Junior Mikayla Meadows muscled in a rebound, and junior Seniah Johnson flipped in a 4-footer that was set up by a Corrothers assist as the lead grew to 12-2 at the quarter break.
Johnson dropped in a lay-up off of a Meadows assist, and freshman Haley George and Singletary drove for baskets. A Corrothers free throw padded the Lady Knight lead to 19-7 at halftime.
Corrthers opened the third quarter with a pair of transition lay-ups and 3 free throws. Senior Carley Dawson hurled in a follow-shot while being knocked to the floor then added a free throw for a 29-9 lead.
Johnson drove for a lay-up, and junior Tatiana Hunt stole the ball and raced for a lay-up that boosted the West Bladen lead to 33-13 at the quarter break.
George canned a free throw to begin the final period. Singletary raced to the rim for a trio of baskets and a free throw then delivered assists that set up a couple of Corrothers baskets. Meadows banked in a 4-footer as the Lady Knight lead grew to 47-18.
Singletary finished with 11 points, 4 steals and 3 assists. Johnson tallied 6 points, and Meadows contributed 4 points and 7 rebounds. George grabbed 6 rebounds, and Dawson pulled down 5 rebounds.
“I thought we started slow, but we got a couple of baskets off of live-ball turnovers then the shots started to fall,” said Lady Knight Coach Brian McCleney. “The defense really stepped up tonight. I thought we might hold them below 20 points and almost did.” A Fairmont basket at the final buzzer accounted for the 20th point.
Coach McCleney added, “The girls came out tonight with a good focus. They were chomping at the bit to get back on the floor after that loss Friday night.”
The Lady Knights improved to 8-1 in the league and 11-3 overall. West Bladen will travel to Red Springs Friday night.
