Junior Anna Grace Long knocked in the only goal of the game off of a corner kick with 9 minutes left to play that gave East Bladen a 1-0 non-conference girls soccer victory at Red Springs Monday.

Sophmore Hannah Devane booted the corner kick into the box. “We had put Anna Grace at the near post because of her height to shield the keeper,” said East Bladen Coach Jay Raynor. “The keeper under-ran the ball and barely tipped it. It fell right to Anna Grace, and she tapped it in.”

The Lady Eagles dominated the statistics, but had problems converting those stats into goals. “Their small field really kept us from running,” continued Coach Raynor. “We wanted to run, but there was nowhere to go. That slowed the game down, and they were better technically on the short field.”

East Bladen outshot Red Springs 20-8 and had 18 corner kicks compared to two for the Lady Red Devils.  “We dominated play, but their goalie had a tremendous game,” said Raynor. “We had a number of point-blank shots that we didn’t convert. The ball didn’t seem to bounce our way at times, but we got the job done.”

Senior goalkeeper Kathryn Cole had 5 saves for East Bladen.

The Lady Eagles remained unbeaten at 4-0 and will travel to North Brunswick Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.
