It was like Christmas on a hot, humid Saturday in June at Vineyard Golf Course at White Lake.

Or, at least, thoughts of helping children at Christmas were on the minds of more than 100 golfers who participated Saturday in the Bladen County Law Enforcement Officers Association golf tournament. The event raised money for Operation Christmas, which provides Christmas gifts for needy children in Bladen County. Last year, 20 children received gifts.

The team of Joey Todd, Lee Todd, Brian Beaver and David Matthews were the winners of the Captain’s Choice tournament.

“We had a wonderful turnout and the tournament was a huge success,” said Highway Patrol Sgt. Philip Collins. “One of the association’s missions is to promote relationships between Law Enforcement Officers and the citizens we serve. The proceeds generated from this tournament will help to accomplish this mission by funding our community service and community involvement projects, like Operation Christmas.”

Gov. Pat McCrory stopped by to offer his support, hit a few shots on the Bill Augustine-owned course, and have a meal. Several Bladen County government leaders also were in attendance.
