Michael Goldgar is one of the people referenced in getting the day of recognition official. In the 1970s Goldgar spent $11,000 of his own money in lobbying efforts to have the day officially recognized, according to some site.

A West Virginia housewife named, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, is another person who fought for Grandparent’s Day. McQuade educated people about the important contributions senior citizens make to our communities and world. She encouraged others to “adopt” a grandparent, for the life lessons they can give.

President Jimmy Carter signed National Grandparents Day into law back in 1978. According to resources, Marian McQuade received a phone call from the White House to advise her of this event.

A presidential proclamation on September 6, 1979, made this day official. From that date on, the first Sunday of September following Labor Day has been National Grandparents Day.

The President is requested to issue a proclamation for National Grandparents Day; and to call on people, to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
