This year Harrells Christian Academy’s third through fifth graders are engaged in Project Based Learning, or PBL. The project is called Solving World Hunger and it will last fr the entire first semester. Students have learned about local and global solutions to feeding the hungry. The first portion of the project focused on solutions to fight hunger locally. Students began in August collecting non-perishable items for the Bladen Crisis Center of Elizabethtown.

Students developed ways to sort donations and developed ways to advertise the food drive during the collection period. They were able to collect a ton and a half of food during the drive. At the conclusion of the drive, Mrs. Kathy Page, who volunteers at the center, came to HCA to allow students to package individual bags for recipients. Through the process, they were able to see how just a few food items were meant to feed families. They developed a better understanding of how little food recipients were given and deepened their appreciation for the need all around them.

Students are appreciative of the time and knowledge Mrs. Page shared and for the community support for the food drive. The project will continue as HCA’s FFA partners with the Lower School to learn about food production and distribution worldwide. The project will then move toward addressing world hunger as students find ways to combat the problem and make others aware of the many needs around the world.
