No pomp or fanfare was observed this afternoon as the underpass on highway 701 at bypass 87 was opened, just startled motorists, like myself, trying to figure out the new traffic pattern.
According to NCDOT website, this intersection sees about 14,000 vehicles per day. The work, which began in early 2015, had an expected completion date of September 2017.
Although the underpass is open, motorists should still expect minor delays while traveling through the project work zone.
