WILMINGTON – Senior Maya McDonald racked up a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds Wednesday and led East Bladen’s unbeaten Lady Eagles to a 53-48 victory over Topsail in the Hoggard Holiday Classic.

McDonald also dished out 6 assists and had 4 steals. Senior teammate Alexus Mitchell drained a pair of 3-point shots and finished with 14 points, 3 blocked shots, 3 steals and 3 assists. Junior AnnaGrey Heustess tossed in 10 points.

Freshman Laila Smith grabbed 5 rebounds and was credited with 2 steals and 2 assists for the Lady Eagles. Freshman Iveonna Ward corralled 5 rebounds, scored 4 points and had 5 steals. Junior Maegan Burney pulled down 5 rebounds, and sophomore Zoe Smith blocked 2 shots.

The Lady Eagles opened the game with a 20-6 1st quarter blitz then battled the Lady Pirates on even terms in the 2nd quarter to maintain a 34-21 halftime lead. East Bladen padded the margin to 46-32 in the 3rd period then withstood a late Topsail closing run.

Coach Patty Evers’ Lady Eagles improved to 10-0 and will host rival West Bladen Tuesday night in their conference opener. The jersey of former East Bladen star Lacey Suggs will be retired in a ceremony following the girls’ game.
