Wilmington, NC – Two charter schools battled for historical supremacy in Douglass Academy’s auditorium recently. Students from Brunswick County’s Charter Day School and Columbus County’s Columbus Charter School answered 300 questions in two hours as part of the third annual “History Bowl”. The event was organized by The Roger Bacon Academy to foster healthy competition and interest in history. Charter Day School emerged victorious by a slim margin in front of a standing room only crowd of parents and friends.

Brett Tharpe, a Charter Day School parent, exclaimed “The History Bowl is a great event. It is impressive to see the depth of knowledge the students have and how quickly they can recall that information. The understanding of our history and culture they gain can only make those students better citizens. It really is amazing to watch.”

Preslee English, an 8th Grader at Charter Day School who led the audience in the school pledge before the event, stated, “The History Bowl is a great way for me to understand and review history that we have learned or will learn about in the future.”

Administrators at The Roger Bacon Academy hope the History Bowl will encourage civic spirit in students while teaching them the facts. Jessica Lopez, The Dean of History and Latin, explained, “The History Bowl represents the rigorous history curriculum of The Roger Bacon Academy. The questions reflect what is taught in class. Students understand the true value of Western Civilization when they graduate from our schools.”

Casey Davis, a 6th Grade History and Latin teacher at Charter Day School who coached her school to victory, commented, “I am so proud of them for all their hard work, but even prouder of them for showing sportsmanship and teamwork.” This is Charter Day School’s second History Bowl victory – the most of any school.
