North Carolina was placed under a state of emergency at 8 a.m Thursday due to the approach of Hurricane Irma. Bladen County residents are urged to begin preparations ahead of Irma’s arrival.

Bladen Schools Public Relations Director Valerie Newton said the school system is monitoring the storm’s progress. She said it is still too early to make any decisions in terms of class schedules for next week.

“We are in constant communication with the National Weather Service and the State Emergency Management,” said Newton.

As of 8 a.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 7th), the storm remained a Category 5 storm the maximum sustained winds of 180 mph and moving west northwest at 17 mph. The eye was located just north of Hispaniola.
