WINDSOR – An inmate serving a life sentence for a first degree murder conviction 13 years ago was charged Friday with the killing of Bertie Correctional Institution Sgt. Meggan Lee Callahan, according to a N.C. Department of Publc Safety news release.
Craig Wissink was charged with murder after the death of the 26-year-old officer after the attack, which took place about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Callahan died about an hour after the assault, according to the state agency.
The news release said that Callahan got a fire extinguisher in an attempt to put out a fire at the facility Wednesday afternoon. Wissink immediately attacked Callahan and managed to use the fire extinguisher against Callahan in the assault, authorities said.
The investigation is continuing. Callahan’s family has requested privacy.
