Tips on iOS9.1
I finally updated to 9.1 from 8.4 avoiding the first couple of updates and fixes. So
here’s some thoughts after using 9.1 for the first day.

Wifi Assist
The first order of business was to cut off “Wifi Assist”. Wifi
Assist substitutes cellular data if your Wifi connection get
weak. So if you walk into a poor Wifi area of your home and
lose your music, the phone will switch to cellular data. This
may be a good option in some cases but I cut it off.
To cut off Wifi Assist, go to Settings/Cellular and scroll all of
the way down (way down) to find the toggle switch for assist.

Low Power Mode
You can set your phone to low power mode at any time or your phone will
suggest it when your battery gets low. LPM cuts off background app resfresh,
auto downloads, mail fetch and some visual effects. to switch on LPM, go to
Settings/ Battery and toggle it. You would want to do this if you find yourself out
on the road without a car charger, otherwise it will be automatic when your
battery goes under 10%.
Siri Suggestions
Have you noticed the screen to the “left” of the primary home screen. If you
swipe left from your home menu to see contact suggestions, app suggestions
map suggestions and news.

IPHONE/IPAD TIPS
If you press a contact you will have choices of
communication.
Select a “nearby” map choice to see food and gas
locations. Take note of the “more choices” button to show
more contacts and apps.
At the bottom of the screen are some news items.
Spotlight Search has the same app suggestions. Access
this search by placing you finger in the middle of any
menu screen and pull down quickly before you press an
app. Enter a name or anything in the search field and
Spotlight will search on the web and every app you have
for a reference to your search string.

Hey Siri !!!
Non-touch Siri response is available now. You just say “Hey Siri – call my wife”
and it’s there listening. It is not working on my iPhone, but give it a try on yours.
Go to Settings/General/Siri and toggle it on. It will lead you through voice
prompts to train your phone. You should be able to command your phone while
you drive.
Want to be reminded about something you are reading? Pull up a web page or
an email or a text, Press/hold the home button to start Siri and say “Remind me
about this tomorrow at 1pm”.
Siri can now access your photos for you. If you say “Show me pictures from July
2015”, Siri show you a selection of images from that time period. If you say
“Show me pictures of Myrtle Beach”, you’ll get those also.

NEWS App
The new NEWS app is for you news junkies. There are dozens and dozens of
news sources to pick from. I picked Fox and Mashable.
Photos Slide Show Upgraded
Finally, Apple is giving us some options for slide shows including music. Select a
group of photos and hit the share button at the bottom. Find the slideshow
button in the share options. At the bottom of the slide show screen, there is an
options button to select style and a song from iTunes. I don’t see any way to
export the slide show.
Lock Screen Code During 9.1 Install
Before you update to 9, be sure that you decide if you want a lock code on your
phone. The lock code screen sneaks up on you during the install. If you casually
put in a code and don’t understand the implications, you may have a big problem.
The default install screens asks you to input a 4 digit code and doesn’t ask you if
you do or don’t want a lock code. The very small options button at the bottom of

the screen will give you more choices for lock codes
including the option to skip over the lock code section.
I fixded someone’s iPhone 6 Plus that was locked up and
the user could not remember what they put in. The end
result was that the phone had to be wiped clean. Since
most users don’t back up their phone, all app’s, messages,
phone recordings, photos were lost. iCloud items that were
saved would be restored if you can remember your iCloud
password.

BACK UP YOUR PHONE TO ITUNES!!! (or to iCloud onyour phone)
DEVICE TIPS
Chomecast TV and Audio
Just as I finished my Jongo audio project, Google released it’s
new Chromecast dongle for your TV’s and an audio dongle for
your powered speakers and amps. The new dongles are round
and provide a extended plug cable for hard to reach TV inputs.
The Chromecast tv device’s major change inside is that 5.4mhz
Wifi streaming has been added for faster, hi-res video.
The audio dongle looks the same and is a Wifi only device. This
means that you are required to be on some Wifi network to stream audio. Both
dongles work with cast-inabled apps or websites. You can cast from your
phones, tablets, and computers. Both dongles are $35 each.
Buying a Chromecast for your tv is a no-brainer. It’s a very cheap way to change
a low-end flat screen to a smart tv. It does a few things that Apple TV can’t do.

Apple TV-4G Is Out
Speaking of Apple, the 4G tv box is out and is
priced at $149. The 3G version is still available
at $69. The new version has an advanced
remote with Siri and trackpad. It’s supposed to
be Apple’s entry into gaming and home control.
