January programs at Jones Lake State Park

Jones Lake State Park has free programs planned each Saturday in January. Each event is open to the public. Participants should meet at the Visitor Center. For more information, call (910) 588-450.

Here’s the schedule:

Snakes: Jan. 17, 11 a.m.: Ever wonder what snakes species are at home in eastern North Carolina? Which ones are venomous? Join a park ranger in exploring the various snakes in the area and the other unique species found throughout the state.

Introduction to Carolina Bays: Jan. 24, 2 p.m.: Join a park ranger and learn about the geological mysteries of the Carolina Bays. Formation theories and the natural communities associated with Carolina Bays will be discussed.

Carnivorous plants: Jan. 31, 2 p.m.: Get up close and personal with the plant that bites back, the Venus Flytrap.  Join a park Ranger for an informative program on the Venus Flytrap and other carnivorous plants such as the Pitcher Plant and Sundew.
