DUBLIN – West Bladen’s Jerena Purdie had her heart set on one school, and Friday that dream came true as she signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Methodist University.

“It’s close to home and not a big school,” said Purdie. ‘I like the coach, they offer chemistry that I want to major in.” Then she mentioned another reason, “My brother Jerome graduated from there.”

The 5-foot, 10-inch center averaged 7.5 points and 6 rebounds per game this year as Coach Rick Rhoda’s Lady Knights qualified for the Class 2A play-offs with a 7-7 Four County Conference record and 12-15 overall mark.

Jerena’s mom, Connie Purdie was also pleased with the decision saying, “I was very impressed with the tour they gave us. It will be a good place for her to experience college life.”

“I am so proud of her,” said Coach Rhoda. “When their coach called me midway the season, I jumped up and just wanted to yell. Jerena has come a long way as a player.”

“I think she will be fine in the post especially if she can develop a couple of post moves,” continued Rhoda. “The only person who can stop her is her.”

“I need to work on my speed and getting up and down the court,” said Jerena.

Coach DeeDee Jarman’s Monarchs compiled a 7-19 record last season and were 5-9 in the USA South Conference.
