John BeckDUBLIN – Noted author and historian, Professor Dr. John J. Beck, will speak at Bladen Community College on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. in the Student Resource Center (building 7) about the costs and benefits of economic and social changes experienced in the south over the past 40 years.

An American history doctoral graduate of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, Dr. Beck in considered to be an expert in Southern history and culture. He co-authored the book, Southern Culture: An Introduction, and is currently working on a history of southern food.

In this presentation, Dr. Beck will discuss how the south has metamorphisized from a predominantly poor region of the country into a destination location for technology, medical research, corporate offices, and suburban living. While this phenomenon has boosted the economy and diversity of the south, this dramatic transformation has also generated social and cultural changes.

Bladen Community College invites you to hear Dr. Beck speak about the significance of this social shift in the south.

This program is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Bladen Community College. The event is free and open to the public. For more information about the BCC Writers Series, contact Dr. Joyce Bahhouth at 910-879-5540.
