Former West Bladen basketball star John Bowen has committed to Elon University as a graduate transfer student and is rejoining Coach Billy Taylor and most of the coaching staff that he had during Bowen’s 2 years at Belmont Abbey.

Taylor was announced as the new head coach for the Phoenix on April 15th and named Assistant Coaches Ryan Saunders and Josh Gross and Director of Basketball Operations Luke Boythe to his Elon coaching staff. All of them coached Bowen at Belmont Abbey.

Bowen played in 12 games during the 2020-2021 for UNC-Wilmington averaging 16 minutes, 4.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

During the 2019-2020 season, Bowen played in 28 of 32 games for the Seahawks averaging 8 minutes, 2 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Against Delaware Bowen drained a pair of 3-point shots and scored 8 points. He set personal career-highs of 9 points and 6 rebounds in a win over Emory & Henry.

In his sophomore season (2018-2019) at Belmont Abbey, Bowen started 27 of 28 games and averaged 23.1 minutes, 9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as the Crusaders posted a 14-4 conference record and 23-8 overall mark. He blocked 36 shots during the season and scored 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the Conference Carolinas championship game.

The Bladenboro native played in 29 games and averaged 12 minutes, 3 points and 2 rebounds per game for Belmont Abbey during the 2017-2018 season.

At West Bladen Bowen averaged 16.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks as Coach Travis Pait’s Knights posted records of 20-8 and 18-10 during his final 2 prep seasons. He posted career highs of 32 points against Wallace-Rose Hill and 16 rebounds versus Union.
