With his family members, coaches and teammates in attendance, West Bladen senior Jonathan Robinson committed Wednesday to play football next season at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Robinson, a 6-foot 5-inch 270-pounder, played both defensive and offensive line at West Bladen. On defense he was credited with 66 total tackles – 39 solo – recorded 3.5 sacks and recovered two fumbles.

“I had the privilege to coach him for all four years here,” said West Bladen football coach Kris Williams. “He is an outstanding young man and a great leader for our line and our team. No doubt he has the athletic ability to have success at Pembroke. I am just excited for him.”

Elon and Wingate also showed interest in Robinson, but UNC-P was the leader from the beginning. “It’s close to home and my parents can come see me play,” he said. “I loved the atmosphere.” Robinson plans to major in exercise science.

Plans are for Robinson to be a redshirt walk-on his freshman year, but he hopes to compete for playing time on the offensive or defensive line by his second year. Coach Williams said that if he works there like he did at West Bladen he will be fine.

Tito Robinson, Jonathan’s dad, said, “It’s a great school and a great community, and it is right here at home. It has been an honor to have him as a son, and now he needs to make sure he gets his education.”

Jonathan’s mom, Stephanie Freeman, said, “I am excited to have him close to home. I don’t know what it’s going to be like without him at home. These last four years have flown by. He is just a good child.”

Robinson also played baseball and basketball at West Bladen.

UNC-Pembroke, an independent Division II school, finished last season with a 2-8 record under Coach Shane Richardson.
