Jones Lake State Park is offering various programs for the month of January. The schedule is as follows:

*January 1, 2018 @ 10 a.m.

First Day Discovery Hike

Start the year off in the outdoors! Join a park ranger for a four-mile hike around Jones Lake! We will be hiking the Bay Trail which travels through several habitats that are found around Carolina Bays.  Discussion on the hike will include the history of Jones Lake State Park and the flora and fauna. Participants should meet at the Visitor Center at 10:00 am for this program. Please bring bug spray, water, and hiking shoes. This event is free of charge and is open to the general public. Contact the park office at (910) 588-4550 with any questions.

*January 6, 2018 @ 3 p.m.

All About Bears

Join a park ranger for a discussion on Jones Lake’s largest mammal……the black bear.  Learn about the biology and habits of the king of the forest.  Participants should meet at the Jones Lake State Park Visitor Center at 3:00 pm. This program is free to the public.  If you have any questions, please call the park office @ (910) 588-4550.

*January 13, 2018 @ 10 a.m.

Compass Course

What would you do if you got lost and only had a compass?  Have you got a compass and do not know what direction to go?  Join a park ranger at 10:00 am for discussion on all the Cardinal points of using a compass.  Participants will use the skills on a compass course.  If you make it through the course your bearings will surely be greased!  Compasses will be provided.  Space is limited, so please call the park office at (910) 588-4550 to reserve your spot or for questions.

Introduction to Carolina Bays
Join a park ranger and learn about the geological mysteries of the Carolina Bays. Formation theories and the natural communities associated with Carolina Bays will be discussed. Participants should meet at the Jones Lake State Park Visitor Center at 10:00am.  Call the Park office at 910-588-4550 for more information. This event is free of charge and open to the general public.

*January 27, 2018 @ 10 a.m.

Snakes
Ever wonder what snakes’ species are at home in eastern North Carolina? Which ones are venomous? Join a park ranger at the Visitor Center in exploring the various snakes in this area and the other unique species found throughout our great state. Participants should meet at the Jones Lake State Park Visitor Center at 10:00 am.  Call the park office @ (910) 588-4550 for more information. This event is free of charge and open to the general public.
